Gardening Tips

Create Shade Garden

Bleeding Heart

Bleeding Heart does best in dappled shade as well as full shade. They are generally early bloomers and have a wonderful soft, lacy foliage. The blossoms are pink and rose pink with white tips. The hearts hang from the horizontal branches. The foliage will span 30 to 36 inches wide. This is a flower for a shade garden, as sun will burn the leaves. They like a rich, moist well drained soil. Beautiful foliage makes a wonderful addition to your shade garden.

The foliage will last quite awhile if the plant is kept cool and moist.

Bleeding Heart - Specatabilis - $ 12.95
The Bleeding Heart Specatabilis, 'Dicentra specatabilis, is a fast-growing perennial with pink, heart-shaped flowers. It is the most common variety in its species. The blooms look wonderful against its grayish foliage. Dicentra specatabilis has a plant height of 30 and a width of 20. Dicentra should be planted in full sun but will tolerate morning shade. It is heat tolerant and needs moist soil. Do not let it dry out. Dicentra will bloom from May to September and is a major attractor to butterflies. Specatabilis makes excellent cut flowers, in mass with groundcovers, or in potted containers. Being an old fashioned plant, it is a must in any landscape.
