Hyacinth Plants

How do I maintain Hyacinth plants with flowers that I bought in store, 2 weeks ago, W/C is in the vase with water on it, and not planted in the soil? And now, the flowers are already starting to go rotten and spoiled.

Hyacinths in Water

Hi Eloisa

I have not actually seen Hyacinth bulbs in water like that, they are usually planted in pots with compost.

If you bought the plants from a shop in those water containers you need to take them back to the shop and get your money back because they should have been in pots with soil or as bare bulbs prior to sprouting.

If you bought them as bulbs and put them in the water yourself without realising they should be in soil, you won't be able to return them to the shop. If that is the case I would plant them in some pots in compost immediately.

The plants will gradually die off but leave the tops on so the nutrients can go back into the bulbs. You can keep the bulbs for next year and provided the bulbs have not rotted you will have flowers next year.

I hope this helps. Basically they should not be just in water like that, they should be in pots with compost/soil.
