Transplanting Jack in the Pulpit

by Elisa Civello

I have a wild Jack in the Pulpit growing under a dying sruce tree. The tree had to be removed as it was dying and leaning over power lines. I want to transplant the Jack in the Pulpit to a shaded area to replicate its habitat now that the tree is gone. When should I do this? The plant will not survive where it is now because of the direct sunlight it will receive for about 6 hours a day.

It would normally be best to transplant in the autumn after the top growth has died back.

However, if the plants survival is seriously at risk, and it is likely to die where it currently lives, I would transplant it now if it was mine. If it is likely to die if you don't plant it I wouldn't wait until autumn unless you can create it some sort of shade to ensure it survives until then.
